| American Guild of Organists Houston Chapter It is time to renew your membership for the 2008-09 year. This AGO membership year runs from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009. Your dues include a one-year subscription to The American Organist magazine and also support programs run by the national guild and our local chapter. Contributions beyond annual dues are both encouraged and tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Membership Benefits Education Under the guidance of the Councillor for Education and three national committees, the Guild provides a wealth of educational opportunities for members at all levels of musical expertise and training. Locally, chapters devote much of their activities to programs designed to increase members' knowledge and skills, Conventions provide numerous educational opportunities, and The American Organist contains in-depth features on historical and musicological topics, as weII as practical articles on all aspects of the musician's work. A list of publications and materials available through the AGO is also a part of every issue. Certification The series of examinations for Guild professional certification sets high standards and offers a concrete way to demonstrate musical growth. More and more churches, synagogues, schools and other employers are becoming interested in the continuing education of their musicians and are recognizing the value of Guild certification. The first level is the Service Playing Test; the higher level examinations lead to certification as Colleague, Choirmaster, Associate and Fellow of the American Guild of Organists. Contact headquarters for full information and current requirements. Communications The American Organist keeps members up to date with the profession by providing both scholarly and practical features and timely news of the Guild and its members. The Pipeline serves the same function locally, and Positions Available listings in both TAO and The Pipeline keep members aware of employment opportunities. Professional Concerns The A.G.O.'s commitment to improving non-musical aspects of the working life of organists and choral conductors is reflected in its programs and professional concerns: cooperation with national denominational officials to influence policies regarding employment; work with seminaries to broaden the musical education of clergy and the theological education of musicians, and development of publications to assist individual members. Professional Concerns committees provide a support base, as well as practical assistance through local employment compensation guidelines and placement services. Additionally Through the national organization, Guild members are eligible for group term disability income, major medical, in-hospital, cancer, and long-terrn-care insurance plans, a Guild-sponsored credit card, and discounts on auto rentals. |
